Colour Calibrating Your Computer: Achieving Perfect Digital Photo Prints - August 31, 2008 -
Have you ever been disappointed with the quality of the prints you received from your local photo laboratory? Or wondered why you can spend hours tweaking your digital images and still get them back with strange colour tones or too much light? Welcome to the often frustrating world of colour calibration!
Problems with colour calibration occur because every computer screen has a different way of showing a particular colour. Even primary colours can be shown very differently if you view them on a different monitor or computer. To see this in action, try looking at the same image on both your own computer and that of a friend or colleague.
The frustrating thing is that the problem gets worse over time - as your computer screen ages it becomes less precise in the way it displays colours. What this means is that while an image may look great on your screen, it will look different and be printed differently at the printers. Some printing labs will try to adjust your photos for you - unfortunately this can often make them look even worse.
Calibrating your computer and a printing facility can be difficult - but in this article we outline some simple ways to achieve greater consistency.

Software calibration:
The Adobe Photoshop image editing suite automatically installs a program called Adobe Gamma into your control panel (START-SETTINGS-CONTROL PANEL). Using this type of colour-calibration wizard will allow you to achieve far more accurate colour calibration settings.

Hardware calibration:
The best possible calibration results are achieved by using physical calibration devices. By placing the device against your monitor, it can adjust your colour profile to a recognized standard. Colour Profiles
To achieve as perfect as possible a match between the image you see on your screen and the one you get back from a printing lab you should ask for a copy of the colour profiles used to calibrate their printing machines. Large photographic laboratories may be unwilling to provide you with this information, but many smaller agencies will be very amenable.

The plethera of equipment (tripods, lenses,filters,lights etc etc) associated with “serious” photography is left at home, or better still in the camera store. Its just too heavy and bulky to cart around, takes way too long to set up and by the time it is set up the moment is gone.

Term life insurance is generally the cheapest form of life insurance, but its not the only option. Unlike term coverage, in which only the face value is paid out upon your death, a whole life policy accrues a cash value.
In order for the cash value to increase, money over and above that which is necessary to cover the premium must be collected. Because of this, whole life insurance rarely will be the cheaper of the two.
With a whole life insurance policy, a portion of the premium you pay will be used to invest in mutual funds, stocks, bonds or other type of interest bearing investment.
Even though whole life is not as cheap as term life insurance, such a policy can make sense if its managed properly.
Benefits of Whole Life Insurance
One of its best benefits is that it will cover a person for his or her whole life. Once the policy is purchased, it will never have to be renewed. It will remain in effect until you die provided you do not allow it to lapse or be compromised in some other way. In addition, the amount you pay for the premium will never change which makes it easier when youre trying to budget.
Another benefit is that you have access to the cash value the policy accrues. You can borrow against the cash value just as you would another type of loan. No one has to approve a loan made against your whole life insurance cash value. You are the one who gets to decide how youll use the money.
If youre not restricted to purchasing only the cheapest life insurance, whole life is an option worth considering. Universal life insurance, which is a variation of whole life insurance, gives you more flexibility in your premium, the term and death benefits, but this flexibility does come with increased risks.
However, since universal life insurance premiums are flexible, it sometimes is the cheaper of the two.
The potential disadvantages
Whole life insurance does have its downsides. One is that its not possible to guarantee a rate of return on your investment so it may not pay the dividends you expect. Another fact worth noting is that a whole life policy probably wont have a cash value until a minimum of 3 or even 5 years so if you surrender the policy during this time, expect it to be costly.
The debate rages on as to whether it makes sense for anybody, regardless of age, gender or marital status, to purchase anything other than the cheapest term life insurance policy.
Some critics believe that if you took the extra money youd pay in premiums and instead deposited it into a savings account or other low-risk interest bearing account, youd accrue more savings. True or not, whole life is an option many people do take advantage of.
And while it may not be the cheapest form of life insurance, it does seem to meet the needs of those who purchase it.

The weather can play a big part on the type of photography we can do. Light is essential, but too much of it or light that is too directional can have an adverse effect.
Overcast days can feel dull and images can appear flat and lifeless without the shadows that the sun produces. However this doesnt mean that you should pack away the camera and wait for the weather to change!
Sometimes you just have to look for a different image. On overcast days look for form and function. Seek out patterns and shapes. Try different viewpoints and angles and make the familiar seem unfamiliar.
Let those that see your images, see something quite different. Make the observers eye settle on a different message. When it is overcast, you cannot rely on shadows and raking light to bring out textures so instead think of other ways to attract the observer.
Portraits are suitable on such days. The diffuse light coming through the clouds produces evenness of illumination for your subject without them having to squint and without the glaring light and harsh shadows of full sunlight.
If you are considering portraits, then sitting your subject by a window will produce fine results as, not only is the light soft and diffuse on an overcast day, but you will also get shadow detail on the side of your model away from the light.
Additionally, you can consider focusing in on action and expressions having your subject doing something will add interest to your shots and enable you to produce images that have a certain feel even when the weather is adverse.

Diaper bags no longer have to scream “baby.” They come in fashionable styles like messenger bags, totes, and backpacks - but unlike their traditional counterparts, they have specialized compartments to hold all of baby’s gear, including changing pads and coordinated wipe holders. The compartments may be lined with special fabrics depending on their purpose, and pockets attached to the exterior of the bag may have a transparent, easy-wipe cover.
Some have adjustable straps for parent’s comfort, and may convert from a standard diaper bag to a backpack style when needed. This is a great help for long trips like visiting the zoo, or a big day of shopping when there are lots of packages to carry. Many cool diaper bags also feature pedestal feet on the bottom to keep the fabric off of the floor or ground.
Many parents are now choosing to use cloth diapering systems, and the newest generation of bags often have accessory bags for cloth diapers that are lined with PUL fabric, usually a Polyester interlock fabric that has been laminated with polyurethane. This is the same fabric that is used for All-In-One cloth diapers, and the diaper covers used for other styles of cloth diapers. This makes the interior compartments waterproof in order to get those soiled cloth diapers home again with a minimum of odor.
Another great feature of the newer bags is the heavy-duty plastic lining on larger interior compartments, like the type used in soft-sided beverage coolers. These compartments can hold ice packs to store bottles or baggies of expressed breast milk, formula and cold foods. The plastic interiors can help prevent leaking milk and food onto the exterior fashion fabrics.
