Baby Proofing Your Home - It Is Essential

Most people go down the path of parenthood at some time in their lives. It is surprising that I was actually one of those people who thought that not having one would mean nothing to me. I used to wonder at some people who were desperately trying to have babies and could not. My reaction used to be 'What's the big deal?'

But in spite of everything, I did decide to go on the path of parenthood and have a baby of my own and that's when the dilemmas began. I went into the operation theatre absolutely calm and composed and in all my nine months I had never felt extremely attached to the baby. I knew that the baby was my responsibility but I honestly did not feel any love. I was the most surprised person when I felt tears rolling out of my eyes when I saw my baby in the arms of the nurse seconds before I was sedated.

And then I was a transformed person. I felt pain when my baby cried. I felt nothing about getting up in the nights and feeding him. I was concerned when he would not have adequate milk. Basically, a typical loving and caring mother! The most awe-inspiring aspect of this situation is that nature seems to have ensured that the parents feel that kind of love and affection towards their children so that there is an inbuilt defense mechanism for the fledglings. The susceptible human child is born with a single self defense mechanism and that is crying. Nature just ensures that at the cry, the parents will go running to ensure that their little one is safe.

Irrespective of this, we obviously need to ensure that we baby proof our house. We should put gates on the staircases, use fasteners on cabinet doors, cover all plug points and keep dangerous things out of reach of a crawling baby. You should ensure that pets are allowed close to the baby only under adult supervision and that you use something to cover sharp corners of furniture.

In spite of all these efforts, there is one thing that you can be sure of. There will be bumps and falls and you should not get upset about them.
