Careers in Writing - June 30, 2008 -
In theory, anyone can call himself or herself a freelance writer because there are no rules or qualifications for entry. It doesn't require a college degree although there are institutions that can prepare individuals for careers in writing in all genres.
A primary resource for people seeking careers in writing is the Internet. In recent years, the Internet has facilitated the development of an extensive online community of people who want to pursue careers in writing. Freelance writers can find work across the world while living wherever they want and even choosing their own hours. The Internet also allows freelancers to put their work on display for potential clients or employers to see.
For those who are unsure of the specific career in writing they would like to dedicate themselves to but are ultimately looking for a permanent job or even those in between jobs, freelancing can be a great way to build experience in a number of areas and can even lead to a permanent position with a company. For writers who prefer more flexibility and are willing to work hard on their own, freelancing can provide as little or as much income, experience and opportunity as one desires.
People who are dedicated to pursuing careers in writing have the option of choosing among these jobs: journalist, online writer, technical writer, communications manager, public relations, writer/analyst, translation coordinator, and being a medical writer.
There are plenty of ways for aspiring writers to launch their careers in writing, including taking up part-time jobs, writing for production companies, winning contests, working in development, interning on media outfits or PR firms, and more.
You need to prepare two items that will help you jumpstart you career in writing. These are your portfolio and your resume. It is crucial to build up a well-written portfolio that will showcase your skills and mastery of the language. You can prepare articles, press releases, scripts, presentations, and/or screenplays that show your familiarity of the various kinds of writing that your potential client will need in the future. You do not have to be commissioned to write, you can write just for the sake of filling your portfolio. Just remember to put the best of the best work you have in there.
Excellent writing and communication skills are valuable when shifting to careers in writing. Double-check your grammar and spelling before presenting your portfolio to your potential client. Proofread your resume or have someone else reread it to make sure that it does not contain typographical or grammatical errors.
Your resume is a marketing tool to present your relevant strengths and skills to a potential employer. It must be concise, clearly written, and well organized. It is ideal to tailor your resume to the specific jobs for which you are applying. This means you must select and include the experience that you feel is most relevant to your career in writing.
These two items will ensure that you will go on to have a successful career in writing.
