Housetrain a Puppy In a Week - September 30, 2008 -
There are many people who mistakenly think that puppies are just little dogs. Nothing could be farther from the truth however. Puppies should be considered more like babies than dogs given that they have not matured enough in size and internal bodily functions.
The idea of having an eight-week-old puppy that’s completely housetrained is a great idea, reality and a puppies physiology are both working against you. These baby dogs have simply not developed bladders that are able to hold their urine for more than about two hours. It isn’t until a puppy is at least 10 weeks and closer to 12 weeks old that they are able to control urination longer than just a few hours.
So one of the more popular questions on forms and other question and answer type sites is how long does it actually take to housetrain a puppy. The answer of course, depends on many factors with the animals’ age being one major consideration.
While there may be frustration in attempting to housetrain a puppy a little early, a strong commitment from you to the task is more likely to result in success than simply waiting and not making any effort at all. This is because another issue that determines how long it takes to housetrain a puppy is the need to unlearn bad behaviors that have been picked up before coming to your home.
Many pet shop animals and those from backyard breeders are kept in small cages that encourage the dogs and puppies to relieve themselves in the same general area where they eat and sleep. This is a very bad habit that actually goes against the preference of dogs to have a clean den like area for sleeping.
Crate training is an excellent way of keeping control of your puppy while he’s in your home. By confining your pet to a crate, you limit the potential for accidents, which can develop into bad habits. The last thing you want is for your puppy to find a nice place on your expensive wall to wall carpet to use as a bathroom.
The way to limit this from happening is to always keep an eye on your puppy when they’re roaming around your home. Watch for your pet signs that they are looking to go to the bathroom. These signs may include sniffing around in out-of-the-way corners, doing a “test squat” or turning around in circles. When you see these signs it’s important to take your dog out immediately. Your goal is No accidents.
Should an accident occur however, immediately and completely clean it up while keeping your mouth shut. It does absolutely no good to yell or get upset with your pet because you were the ones that allow that to happen. A puppy can find a place to go squat and urinate in about five seconds. Remember that you were supposed to watch them when they were out of their crate.
By carefully following crate training methods, it’s common to see real house training progress in just a few days. Once your pet understands what you want them to do and where you want them to do it, you’re well on your way to a completely housetrained new best friend.

Is Dog Food Just a Profit Center Income Boost? - September 30, 2008 -
James Spratt started the first pet food production operation around 1860. He made a dog biscuit from wheat, vegetables, beet root and meat. Other U.S. firms joined the pet food market in the 1920’s. The first meat used in canned dog food was horse. By 1930 pet owners could feed the canned or dry meat-meal dog foods, but most still fed table scrapes. When horse meat wasn’t as plentiful cereal by-products and meat by-products were used for dog food. Many varieties of pet food came about around 1960. Pet food companies offered more canned foods, added the life stages formulas and more dry kibble. Pet food became a commercialized profit center. Pet owners had been using table scrapes for their dogs and cats so at a snails pace many began to feed this new ‘balanced’ diet.
The pet food companies started promoting their food to veterinarians and these vets started selling the food in their clinic. Veterinarian schools don’t have courses on dog nutrition and what they need to eat so I don’t understand why a vet would offer pet food to clients any more than I could see a family doctor selling food to us when we go in for a check up. It’s a moneymaker for the vet and pet food manufacturer. Just because your vet recommends a food, one that he also sells, doesn’t mean it’s the best for your dog. There is no one food that will be best for every dog. What’s best for my 17-year-old dog may not be best for my other 2 dogs. My point here is just because your vet has gone to school and may have years of animal health care under his belt your pet’s food may not be in his area of expertise.
A holistic vet will recommend a natural home prepared diet or a natural commercial food for the health of your dog. A holistic vet has sought nutritional training and they know what your dog eats will effect their health and mental well-being. When they do recommend a processed diet it will be natural, whole grain, real chicken, beef etc., no by-products, no toxic preservatives, no fillers. They have done their due diligence and know what your individual dog needs. To be fair there are times your dog will need a special diet because of certain health issues. But even then your vet may not prescribe the best food. There are many different opinions even between vets on what is best for certain conditions.
You as a responsible dog owner will have to put in your own due diligence when it comes to feeding your dog. Stop putting your beloved dogs health and possible life in the hands of pet food manufacturers or vets who have been trained by the same manufacturers.

Do You Want Your Dog To Listen To What You Say? It Is Easy! - September 29, 2008 -
Will it not be great if your dog starts listening to you just like any human being does?
It is not very difficult to make your dog understand your instructions. Once trained, your dog will also learn to respond. Here are a few tips to train your dog to listen.
Do not repeat the commands again and again hoping that your dog will respond.
How will you feel if somebody repeats a speech over and over again and if the speech is being given in a language that you do not even understand?
In case of dogs, the condition is very similar. Repeating commands will not only irritate the innocent creature but will also teach the dog that the commands being given are meaningless.
Thus, he will show an indifferent attitude and will take his own sweet time to respond! In the meanwhile, if you give up, it is your mistake.
There should not be many distractions during training. Do not expect your dog to learn everything in a short time. Have patience!
If you can not do that, sit and imagine the situation in which you are asked to learn the matter of five new books within a week.
Do not bellow commands at your dog. Neither you nor your dog is in the military! So, do not shout. Train quietly and peacefully. A dog can even listen to whispers.
In a desperate effort to make your dog listen to you, do not end up in a situation where in your dog turns deaf!
Try not to talk nonsense while training the dog. It is not the quantity but the quality and clarity of the communication that matters.
In case your dog does not respond to a cue in a particular situation but does respond to it in some other situation, remove distractions from the new situations and start to train right from step one. Using a food lure briefly in order to get the behavior might be helpful.
Set your dog up for success. Reinforcement is a must when the dog fails to succeed.
If you want to reinforce your dog, your rewards should be meaningful. Do not end up giving a treat to a full-up dog.
Do not train for too long.
Training should be consistent.
Be confident and patient. Do not give up.
Bear in mind that if you love and respect your dog, you will get the same from your pet. Trust your dog and he will listen to you.
If your dog does not listen to you even after investing time and effort into training, it is not the dog that is to be blamed. If this happens, you will have to accept the fact that your dog is not interested in you!

Microchipping Options For Your Dog - September 29, 2008 -
Although microchipping has been around for at least a decade the lack of standardization and co-operation among microchip manufacturers has kept the adoption rate low. But that looks set to change going forward with new entrants.
What Is A Microchip?
A microchip is a small capsule about the size of a grain of rice. It is implanted just underneath the skin, usually between the front shoulder blades. When special wireless devices are held close to the dog, the microchip gives off a code that the reader picks up. This code uniquely identifies your dog, kind of like a social security number.
What Does A Microchip Do?
Because it uniquely identifies your dog, a microchip is very useful in helping return your dog to you should he ever become lost. For example, if your dog wandered off and was picked up by animal control, standard procedure usually requires the animal control folks to scan your dog. At this time they’d read his code and, using an internet database to look you up, they would then contact you.
Why Should I Get My Dog Microchipped?
The real advantage of a microchip is that it’s readable even if your dog’s collar comes off. The main reason that dogs are not re-united with their owners is because the dog cannot be identified. Having a microchip solves this problem.
But I Heard That Microchips From One Company Can’t Be Read By Others?
Sadly, there is a lot of truth to this statement. There are at least six companies offering microchips in the United States (Banfield, AVID, HomeAgain, resQ, AKC CAR, and 24 Pet Watch). There are also at least four different microchip frequencies in use: 125 kHz unencrypted, 125 kHz encrypted, 128 kHz, and 134 kHz.
The important thing is that the microchip reader must be able to read microchips from any one of the frequencies. In the past there was a lack of co-operation among microchip providers and some readers were not able to read multiple frequencies. This meant that some dogs were needlessly euthanized because of incompatibility between microchips and microchip readers.
Things Look Set To Change
resQ’s recent entry into the microchip scene using ISO-standard 134 kHz microchips is not the exciting part. The exciting part is that resQ is distributing thousands of microchip readers to shelters and veterinary hospitals around the country. The resQ readers are capable of reading all four frequencies. This means that any lost dog, no matter which company’s microchip he has implanted, will be readable.
What Should Dog Owners Do Now?
Talk to your veterinarian or shelter about your options. Microchipping is painless and cheap and every pet parent should get her dog microchipped. Over the next year or two the industry will begin to adopt standards set around ISO-frequency chips (134 kHz) and multiple frequency microchip readers that solve the problem of incompatible equipment.
Don’t forget to register your microchipped dog either. Registration is not automatic and usually costs no more than a few dollars. Registration puts your dog’s details and your contact info in a database so that your dog can be re-united with you if someone finds him.

Keep Your Dog In Good Health - September 28, 2008 -
Taking your dog to the vet can be a harrowing experience for you and your dog. However, it is necessary to ensure your dog of a healthy, happy and long life. Your dog should see the vet once a year for annual checkups, shots and a blood test for heartworm. Always take your dog to the doctor immediately if it is sick or injured.
Puppies will need to be vaccinated with a 5 in 1 combination vaccine at 2, 3 and 4 months old, followed by annual shots. This vaccine inoculates your pup from hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and distemper. Larger dogs such as Doberman Pinschers, American Staffordshire terriers/pit bulls and Rottweilers will need the combination vaccine up until five months of age. An unvaccinated dog that is older than four or five months old will be required to have a series of two vaccinations administered two to three weeks apart. After these shots, be careful that your puppy does not walk outside or sit or walk on the floor of an animal hospital until a few days after the last vaccination is completed, thus avoiding infection. Some states require a rabies vaccination for your puppy which should be given annually for two years and followed up by boosters every three years. If your animal becomes sick and was not properly vaccinated, be sure to administer the vaccine once the animal has fully recovered.
Heartworm is a common and deadly parasite. It lives in the dogs heart and is transmitted by mosquitoes. Every spring, it is a good idea to get your dog tested for heartworm. This test will determine whether or not your dog was infected the year before. During mosquito season, you can give your dog a once-a-month pill to protect it. If you travel out of your area and weather to a tropical or warm place where there will be mosquitoes, your will want to give your dog or puppy preventative heartworm medication for the duration of the trip. If you live in a warm climate all year long, it is advisable to constantly monitor and administer heartworm medication.
Roundworms and hookworms are also on the roster of disabling doggie diseases. Dogs can be exposed to these infections through microscopic eggs in another dogs infected feces It is common for puppies to contract hookworms or roundworms and this can be treated by your trusted veterinarian.
Whenever you kiss or get licked by your dog and you inhale the dog breath this may not just be a case of gingivitis. Your dogs bad breath is an indication to you that your dog may have a serious liver or intestinal disease, diabetes, kidney disease or just needs to go to the dentist. A regular dental check-up and cleaning will determine if your dogs mouth has bacteria and plaque which would require professional treatment. You can maintain your dogs good dental health by brushing the teeth on a regular basis and feeding it dental treats to chew on. With a childs soft toothbrush, the owner can clean the canines teeth with dog toothpaste or baking soda and water paste weekly. If your dogs bad breath is accompanied by other symptoms of ill health such as depression, loss of appetite or vomiting, take your dog to the vet to get a full check-up.
Always check your dog for fleas and ticks and never feed your dog medication that has not been prescribed!

7 Tips For New Puppy Owners - September 28, 2008 -
1. Good management skills: Puppies can get into trouble very quickly. A new puppy owner needs watch her puppy all of the time. When you can not keep an eye on your puppy, it is a good idea to use some type of confinement. I like to use crates. A crate is a great way to manage your puppys behavior when you are not home. As a former animal control officer, I have seen many young dogs that have been injured when left on their own. Almost all dogs at some point in their lives will be exposed to a crate. An overnight stay at the Vets office, a grooming appointment, or if you have to travel will all require your dog to go into a crate. It is much better to teach your new puppy to love her crate than it is an adult dog.
2. Start training early: For many years dog owners have been told that they could not start training their puppies until they were six months old. This is just simply untrue. A good reward based puppy class is the most important thing that you can do for your young puppy. Your puppy will become well socialized and many behavior problems can be prevented before they ever start.
3. Socialization: You can never over-socialize your puppy. The first four months of your puppys life are the most impressionable. To become a confident and stable dog, a young puppy needs to be exposed to many different people, dogs, places, sounds and scents. Bringing your puppy in for grooming is a great way to introduce him/her to new environments, sounds, smells and people.
4. Puppy proof the house: Anything that you value should be put away until after the puppy stage. Also, keep a close eye on you puppy around electrical wires. Puppies love to chew on wires. A crate is a great way to keep your puppy safe when you cant be right there to watch her.
5. Going to the vets office: Drop by the vets office when you dont have an appointment. Most veterinarians will allow this but give them a quick call before you come by. When you get to the vets, give your puppy some treats and have the office staff give some treats also. For the rest of your dogs life going to the vet will not be a chore. You can also do this at a grooming shop.
6. Consistency: Have a game plan for everyone in the house to follow. Bad habits develop and many dogs become confused when half the family allows the puppy onto the furniture and the other half scolds the puppy for being on the furniture. Consistency is very important in training your young puppy or dog.
7. Take loads of pictures: You will be amazed at how fast your puppy grows and changes. You will be thankful down the road for those pictures.

The Benefits of Obedience - September 23, 2008 -
A well-trained dog is a happy dog. It may seem ego-driven to some people, but obedience training is as much for the happiness of the dog as it is for people. When a dog is trained, it can be trusted far more around children, on walks, not to jump on guests, and even not to go potty inside. This allows them to move freely though the house around kids or guests, go for more walks, and not be confined to a room or a crate every time the owners leave. Though many new pet owners have trouble spending the time and energy on obedience training, it is exactly what dogs need in order to be fun, low stress additions to the family.
The most important reason for obedience training is for the dog’s safety. The use of voice commands can bring your pet to safety in a variety of potentially dangerous situations. Perhaps the collar slips off of your dog while crossing the street or on a busy road. A voice command can bring it back to your side, out of harms way. There are so many emergency situations in which a “recall” command could save a dog’s life because the owner has immediate control over its behavior. It is a complex world of fast moving machines and dangerous things that dogs do not understand, and it is the responsibility of owners to look out for them.
The second greatest reason for dog training is bonding. This time will strengthen the relationship between dog and owner, and the levels of understanding, respect, and communication will grow tremendously. The dog will come to respect its owner as the leader and “alpha” the pack, and the owner will learn some of the ways the dog communicates.
When a dog is left without training, the odds are against it. In most cases the dog will misbehave because it does not respect nor understand the owner, causing the owner and others, such as family or neighbors, to be constantly negative around the dog. This is not a good situation for anyone, and some dogs will end up homeless. Without good training, it will be difficult for them to find a new home as an older dog, when there are plenty of puppies for sale. It is statistically proven that puppies, which are socialized and trained from an early age, are much less likely to be euthanized by a pound, rather, those that end up in shelters or rescues are quickly adopted by loving families.
Just like a responsible and loving parent, a good dog owner must teach their dog to behave. It will insure a long and happy life for the dog, and wonderful memories and moments for the owner. If you think you are ready to get a new puppy or older dog, be sure that you are willing to commit a little extra time to give the dog the attention and education it needs.

Basic Dog Training Ins And Outs - September 22, 2008 -
The quid pro quo method of dog training is one of the most effective techniques going. By reinforcing good, or desired, behaviors and discouraging unwanted actions, this practice quickly teaches a dog that following commands results in praise and rewards.
Mastering the art of this type of training will likely take some training on the part of the people involved, too. It can take a little while to get used to and it can be a little difficult not to cave into a dog that’s batting big eyes and a sad face in its owner’s general direction.
The best way to handle positive reinforcement is to make sure it happens right away after the desired behavior is performed. The reward must come instantly and repeatedly, every time the dog does as it’s told. Since this is the case, many trainers steer clear of food rewards and go with positive comments or pats and scratches. If food is used, be certain that the treats offered for reward are rather small and do offer verbal praise, too.
When seeking to train a dog to follow basic commands, it’s important for a set vocabulary to be assigned. The words chosen should be used every time. For example, sit should mean sit, don’t mix it up with down, which should mean lie down. Pick the words that will be used and make sure they are consistent among everyone who will be working with the dog.
Getting a dog to respond consistently to commands and praise will take a little bit of time. With multiple efforts and some patience, positive reinforcement can pay off very big. Still, there are times when a dog will simply not behave in a manner that is acceptable to its owner.
What then?
Every so often, actual punishment will be required. This can come in the verbal, physical or even postural form. As it is with rewards, punishment should come swiftly, when the dog is engaged in the act.
It is very important to make sure a dog associates the behavior with the punishment. Harsh language, loud noises and upset posturing are much better choices than actual physical punishment. Physical punishment can result in a dog developing a fear for and aggression toward people.
When loud noises are used, try to make sure the dog associates them with the thing making the noise rather than a person. Use an air horn, shaker can or other object rather than your own voice, if necessary. This ensures the dog will not be afraid of you and also helps make sure the behavior reinforcement stands when you are not at home.
Dog training can take a little time and patience, but it is something almost anyone can accomplish.

Teach Your Puppy To Chew On Toys And Not On Items Around The House - September 22, 2008 -
Training you puppy always requires repetition and consistency. You must establish yourself as the master and your puppy must understand that he is to follow your instructions. Puppies have a desire to please their owners. Repetition and consistency are the keys that will help your doggie learn and understand a command. Provide several chew toys and teach your puppy and help him to develop proper chewing habits.
Keep the doggies area of the house clean and clear of items that you dont want your doggie to chew. A puppy will naturally chew anything that is in his reach. Train you doggie to play with chew toys and teach him to greet you with a chew toy. Always encourage him to use a toy when he greets anyone.
Praise you puppy when he does something right. Your dog will learn from your consistent and constant praise that he is loved and he will learn to obey your commands. Dont raise your voice or shout at your puppy as this will only confuse him.
If you leave a purse or shoes in his area he will likely chew on them and usually will ruin you purse or shoes. When you find your puppy with your shoe in his mouth, gently remove the shoe and replace it with one of his favorite toys. Remember you left the shoe where he could find it.
Its important to train your doggie when he is little and he does not have to unlearn his bad habits. Start training your doggie early.

Dog Training And How To Start Off Right - September 21, 2008 -
Very few things are as cute as a puppy. If well selected and properly trained, the puppy will grow into a dog that will give the owner years of enjoyable interaction with the animal. The question is; What factors really do matter in choosing and training a dog? We have all at some time met a dog that behaves badly. Given the choice, most will prefer a dog and a relationship with that dog that is harmonious and free of the kind of trouble that a poorly behaved dog can bring.
The first issue to consider outside of the particular breed that you favor and their general temperament, is the selection of the puppy. Some jurisdictions will not allow a puppy to be separated from its mother till after 8 weeks of age. This isn’t a bad idea considering that the puppy learns crucial social skills from its mother during this early period of growth.
Some advisors suggest a series of three tests when actually selecting the puppy. The first test is an interaction test. Is the dog willing to interact with you? Will it trust you, come up to you and allow itself to be touched by you? This is essential to the development of a healthy relationship with the dog.
The second test is an intelligence test of sorts. It involves engaging the dog in play. Does the dog concentrate well on the playing? Does the dog show alertness in the play? Obviously the play has to be simple, given that the dog is only a puppy, but there has to be some kind of indication that the brain of the dog is functioning well.
The third test is the test that some people have trouble with; the dominance test. If the puppy will not allow you to dominate it, then you will have trouble later on, particularly with a large or aggressive breed. The way that you test the willingness of the puppy to be dominated by you is to lay the puppy on it’s back and hold it down with your hand on it’s belly. If the dog struggles a bit at first, that’s O. K., but if the dog continues to struggle and will not let you hold it down, then there is a problem.
A dog that strongly opposes being dominated by you as a puppy will not change it’s ways later in life. You will have trouble training that dog and controlling that dog as long as it lives. Save yourself the grief and select a dog that allows you to dominate it.
The next step after selecting the puppy is to train the dog. This is the stage where some dog owners fall down. A puppy needs a great deal of social interaction and a good part of that is showing it how to behave. Another way of describing that is to call it training.
The problem is that in order to be effective, dog training needs to be as consistent as possible. Obviously the best way to learn how to train a dog is through expert guidance; whether it be a dog trainer, or a dog training manual. Yet that training still needs to be carried out consistently. Teaching alone will not compensate for failing to apply the training in the same way over and over.
If the goal of the reader is to select and raise a well behaved dog, then the additional effort necessary to achieve this goal is the price you’ll have to pay. Once the dog has grown beyond being a puppy, the results of this effort will show. A harmonious and enjoyable relationship with your dog will be your reward.
