Around this time of year, just about every school, sports team and non-profit organization in our collective communities send their minions out into the neighborhood to hawk candy bars, candles, Christmas wreaths and just about anything else they can get their hands on. All done in an effort to fill the coffers of the group in support of their activities for the coming year. Weve all probably done this type of product fundraising sometime in our lives. And weve all supported the effort of others since it is as noble as it is capitalistic.
But times have changed. The proliferation of groups raising money has reached a fever pitch while at the same time, prices and product quality have suffered under the weight of increasing profit demands from these organizations. We end up buying products we dont need at over inflated prices just to support little Janie or Johnnies soccer team. Perhaps we do it out of guilt or maybe obligation. We definitely dont do it because it is consumer savvy.
But there are new options on the horizon, courtesy of the ever efficient and expanding Internet, which are both consumer savvy and fundraiser friendly. Many groups have carwash fundraisers to raise money and get the funds they need to run their nonprofit group. Carwash fundraisers are fun and a very popular fundraiser to do. However, it is very important to stay organized in a car wash fundraiser.
During the carwash fundraiser with all kinds of cars lined up and trying to proceed with production it can appear to be chaotic and this is problematic for making the most amount of money.
It is important to have your carwash fundraiser well organized and well staffed. It is best to break the carwash into shifts and have half the kids come in the morning and half the kids come midday to relieve the kids who have been working.
It also makes sense to set up cones to guide the traffic and the cars that are waiting in line to get car washes.

Last fall I went to my nephews high school football game at the concession stand there were all the usual greasy (but tasty) foods. After all sports fans would not be happy if there were no French fries, hot dogs or sodas! But to my pleasant surprise there were also several great healthy options too — bottled water, granola bars and deli style sandwiches.
Now days one of the big issues for school districts is offering healthy food options. Many parents are concerned about the high obesity rates for children. They want to know that healthy food options are at least available. This extends even into extracurricular activities like sports and the foods that are offered at concession stands.
There are other reasons to offer healthy options at the school concession stands too. Many families are very busy and the sports concession stand may provide the family meal for the evening. Having healthy choices will give people more to choose from than just the usual burgers and hot dogs.
Providing consideration for people with dietary restrictions is also another reason to offer a variety of foods. Offering lighter options for those on weight loss diets, dairy free items and vegetarian options will be a welcome change for some of your sports fans.

Tupperware? That was my initial thought, too. I pictured the Tupperware parties of which Id heard so often and the sole party I intended. How could you raise money with a Tupperware fundraiser if everyone had to attend a party somewhere? And who would host all those parties?!

Then I learned that a Tupperware fundraiser is not based on parties. A Tupperware fundraiser is run much like any other fundraiser, except that you offer a quality, durable product instead of cheap consumables.
Think back to the last fundraiser you had. Maybe you offered an array of candles or coupon books. Many of your workers felt they were pushing products people neither wanted nor needed. Instead of appealing to the buyer, they were trying to sell products that were easy to get at low prices.
It all boiled down to a basic feeling that you were dealing with mediocre products, which produced mediocre sales efforts.
Tupperware Fundraisers Are Successful
The Tupperware company offers Tupperware fundraisers for non-profit organizations and schools and a Tupperware fundraiser is likely to be highly successful.

4. Teach volunteers to convey the I like you message to every potential customer. People like to be liked, and will more readily order from your Tupperware fundraiser volunteers if they appear to like each customer sincerely.
5. With the I like you message, convey trustworthiness. The two together tend to convince customers that you have their best interest in mind.
Tupperware fundraisers have been successful for many groups. They can be so for your group, too, but you must work smart to make it happen.

How to Build a Better Budget in Your Grant: Advice from Grant Makers - September 21, 2008 -
As the Grants Committee Chair on the Board of an Educational Foundation that gives small grants to teachers, I have participated in two grant review sessions. There, I learned more than I could have in two years of simply writing grants. Reading grants was like interviewing candidates to invest the money we spent all year fundraising and taught me the no grant will be funded if it appears financially risky. Here are some tips on creating a budget that will attract funders, rather than scare them off.
1. Ask For a Definite Amount of Money
Requesting as much as you can give does not make you more favorable to a Board because you are saving them by unburdening them from an excessive grant. Instead, it leaves several bad impressions: a) You do not have enough confidence in your program to believe it worthy of full funding; b) Your budget is either inflated or unrealistic; c) You have not fully thought out your budget and are unsure of the real costs of your program. When you make a request, make it confidently and show you know exactly how much you need.
2. Ask For a Reasonable Amount of Money
During our second round of grant making, when our total assets were under $100,000 and the only grant we had ever given was for $2,000, we received a grant request for $10,000. This mistake automatically eliminated the proposal from consideration and could have easily been avoided if the writer had done a little research on our past grants.
3. The More Detailed Your Budget, The Better
The first rule of budgets is to follow exactly the format that the RFP requests. If there is no specific format requested, then take the following advice to heart.
It is essential that you break your budget into, at minimum, the following categories: salaries, fringes, equipment, materials, purchased services, and indirect costs. Within some of those categories, be as detailed as possible. If you are buying equipment or materials such as books, computers, or other supplies you can easily predict their market cost by searching Amazon.com or an Office Depot Catalogue. Use these price listings and either reference them in your grant or attach copies of them. Our committee once shared a good laugh over an applicant who requested $100 for something we knew the Walmart in town sold for $20.
4. Dont Ask For What They Dont Give
Foundations are usually very clear about what they will and will not fund. Read their website and grant guidelines carefully and be sure not to ask for that which they already said they wont give. This seems obvious, but sometimes applicants excited about their projects hope that the funder will be just as excited and make an exception. Trust me, they wont.
