The first question you need to ask before you zero in on the perfect camera for your needs is what kind of photos you wish to take. This could range from portraits to landscape to sports.
How does this affect the kind of camera you opt to buy? Depending on your choice, the type of zoom and LCD display, the quantum of light needed, and how portable the camera is, will all vary.
What kind of fine detail do you seek in your photos? That will help determine the number of mega pixels you are looking for in the camera. If you are not planning on making larger size prints, a camera with a 4-mega pixel sensor should suffice.
Optical and digital zoom perform distinct functions. While digital zoom is used to magnify the photo, optical zoom improves focus through the manipulation of the lens. If you are an amateur photographer, 4X optical zoom should suit your purpose.
The LCD display should be sufficiently bright, with the facility to minimize brightness at night.
Look for a camera with value added features. These should include an optical image stabilizer, advanced noise reduction and face detection technology, and high ISO which should allow shooting in low light without using a flash.
Processing speed and saving speed also matter, particularly if you are amateur who wants to take blur-free photos, on the go. An auto-focus mode simplifies matters, further.

So you now own Photoshop but you’ve never taken any lessons or tutorials about how to use it.
Never fear, there is plenty of online help. You can read the Photoshop tutorials on the Web for a fee, you can read the demo version of paid tutorials free of charge (generally the first few chapters), you can buy the CD for just under $100, or you can download a PDF of Photoshop tutorials.
Let’s take a look the first and most basic of the Photoshop tutorials.

But to start to realize the potential that digital photography puts in the hands of the average person, a photo editing software program will be needed where you upload your photos from the camera to your computer and then open them in the program. You can then begin to perform all kinds of editing tasks including more advanced cropping, change the file size or format, adjust color saturation, contrast and brightness, and apply special effects.
You can learn to make amazing enhancements to any photograph using the tools and functions available in Photoshop. The following are just a few of the improvements you can make to people pictures. Whiten stained teeth, Remove unsightly scars, Smooth age wrinkles, Clear up acne, Remove blemishes, Double chin removal, Fill in bald spots by adding hair, Open closed eyes, Remove tattoos, Hide body piercings, and even Change eye color.
Remember your audience. If your photos are destined for Web pages, don’t worry about minor flaws; get the dark-and-light balance right and make sure your pictures are mostly close-ups. If your photos are going to be printed at 8-inches by 10-inches or larger, take the time to smooth out the flaws. Make brutal crops, too. No one will know later that you took out the telephone pole alongside Billy’s head. Distractions are just as annoying in photographs as they are in real life.
Sharpening is one of the most impressive transformations you can apply to an image since it seems to bring out image detail that was not there before. What it actually does, however, is to emphasize edges in the image and make them easier for the eye to pick out - while the visual effect is to make the image seem sharper, no new details are actually created. The first step in sharpening an image is to blur it slightly. Next, the original image and the blurred version are compared one pixel at a time. If a pixel is brighter than the blurred version it is lightened further; if a pixel is darker than the blurred version, it is darkened. The result is to increase the contrast between each pixel and its neighbors. The nature of the sharpening is influenced by the blurring radius used and the extent to which the differences between each pixel and its neighbor are exaggerated.
In one wedding photograph, the groom stood still at the bottom of stone steps to an historic dwelling, his hand extended towards his bride, who slowly moved down the steps toward her groom. My six deliberate ‘clicks’ of the shutter created an airy, surreal picture of the wedding couple. Depending on the speed of the moving subjects, the shutter can be held down in rapid fire mode or each exposure can be meticulously choreographed: 1) each subject deliberately positioned in the frame, 2) one ‘click’ of the shutter, and 3) repeat steps 1 and 2 to the total number of multiple exposures you set in your camera.
While you can easily enough create the effect of black and white what about things like drop shadows, watermarks, blurring the background and even soft focus your pictures. Photoshop is the perfect tool to be able to do this. Drop Shadows: This is an excellent effect to use on text, logos, and graphic art. Watermark: It is easy with Photoshop to create a custom watermark on your photos. Soft Focus: Soft focus is a popular effect used by professional photographers for years to enhance portraiture. Blur the Background: Pictures of people and other objects will really stand out when the background is blurry. Photoshop allows you to only blur certain areas of the image while leaving other areas in perfect focus. Frame: There are unlimited ways you can put frames around your photos in Photoshop.
Starting up a new photography business isn’t just fun and games. You’re going to need to do is advertise. You’ll have to print out business cards, take out ads in magazines and newspapers and more or less get the word out that you exist. If you’re hoping to break into the field taking photos for a magazine like Playboy, then you’re going to have to first get some private work photographing models in order to submit these photos to the magazine itself. Before you do that though, you’re going to have to write to the magazine for permission to send photos. Most publications do not accept unsolicited material.

Choose a photographer that makes you feel comfortable.
Not everyones personality is an automatic match up. Interview a few photographers and see who gives you the feeling that they genuinely want to make you look your best in your portraits, and theyre the kind of person you will feel comfortable working with. If you have confidence in your photographer, you will have a more successful portrait session.
Plan Ahead
Your photographer should offer to have a meeting with you to discuss and plan your portrait with you. During that meeting/ consultation, you and your photographer will get to know each other a little better, and hell get your ideas about what you want for your portrait. You should talk about color schemes, discuss hair and makeup options as well as the overall look and feel you want in your portraits. A thorough consultation will also help you start planning how to incorporate your portraits in with the other furnishings in your interior decoration scheme.
A Helpful Consideration
At the elite level of sports competition as well as in business, a method called visualization is used with excellent results. It can have a measurable effect in the end results of your portrait session as well. Obviously this will require some serious thinking. Consider who you are as a person, a couple, and, or a family. Condense your description down to one or two sentences. Then consider how you could best portray that essence of who you are in a portrait. Imagine what the portrait should look like. Imagine your pose, your clothes, your expressionvisualize what it will look like, and the feeling of great satisfaction you will have as a result.
Wardrobe, Dressing For A Portrait
They say, the clothes make the (person). The art of portrait photography is to capture not only the best view, or countenance of the subject, but also the personality and mood. It is a persons eyes and face that tell the story of their personality. (Include body language in and full-length portraits). So, the goal of wardrobe in a portrait is to flatter the subject, and influence the mood. To that end, the clothes should be relatively subdued. Colors should be muted rather than bright and loud, and solid colors are usually better than prints. Aloha prints with a color print over a color background are better than those with white over a dark color. Those present too much contrast and will distract the viewer from the subject(s).
Keep in mind that the clothes help to set the mood or feeling of the portrait, so its best to avoid the latest, greatest, in styles in favor of more timeless standards. That is, if you want your portrait to have a lasting quality and value, and not be too dated.
Light tones in clothing, bright and cheery though they are, are not necessary for a portrait to have a bright and cheery look. It is also true that dark clothing will not necessarily present a somber mood. Again, it is the eyes and facial expression that dominate and tell the story.
In photographic portraiture, the fact that light colors diminish shadows produces the result that the figure appears slightly fuller. Also, very light or white clothes can tend to wash out your skin tone. The opposite is true with dark toned clothes: they intensify shadows, have a slightly slimming effect, and skin tones appear deeper.
Here are a couple more tips about dressing for your portrait: loose fitting, long sleeves will draw attention away from your arms. If you feel your arms are too big, or you have blotchy skin or band-aids on your arms, wear long, loose fitting sleeves. An open, scoop or V-neck shirt or blouse will add the appearance of length to your neck, where a crew or turtleneck will give the appearance of a shorter neck.
Jewelry And Accessories
Keep it simple is the best advice here. Remember, the part played by accessories and jewelry, the same as with clothing, is simply to flatter the subject, not steal attention from the subject: you. Unless an accessory or piece of jewelry is essential to the look or feel you want in the portrait, or is something you wear all the time, or has special meaning to you, leave it out.
On the other hand, if something is important to you such as your great aunts locket, or great granddads walking stick, or plays an integral part of your life such as a stethoscope, or a canoe paddle, talk with your photographer about how to include it in some of your portraits.
Makeup
Men will tend to skip right over this while women will zoom inMEN: before by-passing this whole topic, look in a mirror at your face. What color is your skin? Hows the complexion? Circles under the eyes? Are your nose and forehead shiny? You want to look your best in your portrait, and its perfectly OK for men to blotter the forehead, put a little powder on for portraits. Even a little lightener under the eyes or blush on the cheeks! Even Arnold, and Steven Segal wear makeup when on camera!
Now, Ladies, just do what you do normally in applying your makeup, as if preparing for an evening at a benefit gala: tastefully a little stronger than for daytime. Its a good idea to bring all your makeup to the session along with some tissues and cold cream. Your photographer may have some suggestions for color changes or additions.
Hair
Real basic here: Make sure your hair is clean and styled the way you want it when you get to the session. And bring your brush, comb, spray, gel, whatever you might need to re-do it! If your hair needs to be cut before the session, have it done at least a week prior to having your portraits made. If you are having your hair styled specifically for the session, have it done just before going to the studio.
Posing
Whether your portrait style will be literal or interpretive, if you give some thought to posing before going into your session, itll be easier to work with your photographer, and you will look more natural and relaxed in your portraits. In the weeks or days preceding your portrait session be particularly aware of people you see in commercials, movies, magazines, TV shows, at the park, at home, at a friends house. Try to see poses of individuals, or groups, which look good, and portray a quality of feeling or emotion as in a good painting. Imagine yourself or your group in the same or similar pose.
When we see ourselves in a photograph, or portrait, we dont always look the way we think we do, or should. Fact is all faces are asymmetrical to a greater or lesser degree, and we can present different looks from different angles. Its a good idea to look at your face in a mirror and practice looks that you think are flattering to you. Check your smile from different angles. Look at your nose and chin from different angles. What looks best to you? Work on reproducing two or three looks that you like. When you get to your portrait session show your photographer what you like, and ask for help if you think you can use it. Remember, the lighting your photographer uses wont be the same as you have in your bathroom or hallway where your mirror is, so if he knows what you like, hell be able to reproduce it for you with his lighting.

For photographers wanting to get into the stock photography business, it is important to look closely at any agency that you are thinking of submitting work to. Choosing the agency that is right for you could be the difference between success and failure.
The market
It is important to look at the type of work an agency has in its library. Make sure the subject matter matches the type of work you do. Particularly if it is a specialist library. A little research and you should also be able to find out the type of clients they supply. One way of doing this is to make a list of various publications where you would like to see your photos and check the credits for agency names. Then working backwards, research the agency from there. Many agencies have strong relationships with particular clients and because of this this clients will automatically return to this agency automatically every time they need to license an image. Establishing yourself with the right agency for your marketplace could mean that your work becomes seen regularly where you want it to be seen.
Style
As well as looking closely at the subject matter held by agencies, look at the style of images and the image of the library itself. Is the stock bold and colorful? Modern and experimental? Editorial or commercial? Or do the images have a more classic feel. Stock agencies can be picky about who they work with. If your work differs too much from what an agency has in their library and what they know they can sell, it isn’t likely they will want to work with you. This doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with your work, you just haven’t found the right business partner yet. Fortunately there are hundreds of agencies, and one to suit all styles.
The contract
Once you find an agency you want to work with, make sure you read the contract carefully. Know exactly what you’re getting into. Some key points to look at are the commission structure. What percentage of each sale do you get compared with the agency? Also check the submission requirements. Some agencies require a certain number of submissions per year, others have no restrictions. Make sure you can keep up with your end of the bargain before you sign a contract. It is also a good idea to find out if and how you can terminate a contract if things don’t work out. Because despite all our best efforts, some things just don’t go to plan.
Reputation
If you do enough research on the stock photography industry, you will come to learn which agencies are known for professionalism in customer service and looking after their contributors and which aren’t. Choosing an agency is choosing a business partner. To build a successful partnership, both parties need to be looking out for each other. Don’t get stuck with an agency that promises and demands much but delivers very little.
The stock photography industry is a difficult and competitive one. Like all careers, your success or failure depends on the decisions you make. Choosing the right agency is a giant step forward in being successful in selling stock photography.

Correct composition is without doubt one of the most important factors when seeking to take that perfect photograph, composition being most critical when taking landscapes.
But what is “composition” and why is it so important?
In essence, composition is all about putting together objects in your viewfinder in such a way as to emphasise the bits you want to, making them stand out in just the right way. These objects include anything in the foreground, the background, those that “frame” the picture, and most importantly light. I’m sure you’ve seen many landscape photographs with so many objects in them that you’ve honestly had no idea what the subject actually was? Was it the mountain? Well, it could have been, but it’s sort of obscured by that tree. No, how about the waterfall, but that’s not very centred, and anyway I’ve never seen a sky that colour before.
The truth of the matter is that most successful photographic compositions are in fact quite simple, there may be numerous objects but there is never any doubt as to what the subject actually is.
Another great truth is that no matter how expensive your camera equipment is, that without a knowledge of composition, you’ll never be able to “capture” the essence of the image you see. Worse still, someone with a cheaper set up, and who knows about composition, will more than likely be producing better photographs…
Annoyingly, some people seem to have the knack for creating well composed images, while others have to shoot and shoot whilst they hone their composition skills. The important thing to remember is that wherever you start, you will only get better with practice.
With landscapes the challenge is to capture an image so that the subject is presented in the way that you want it to be, which for many means learning new ways of seeing what is in front of you.
Besides the subject, there is of course “light”, it can make all the difference between a fantastic picture and a dull and uninteresting one. Make sure you note the lights direction, intensity and colour (yes the colour of light changes quite dramatically, e.g. at the beginning and end of the day).
Besides the colour of the light, the position of the sun in the sky also has a major impact on a photograph, as when the sun is low it produces marvelous shadows that enhance the subjects shape and give it that important 3d effect.
There is another thing about taking photographs when the sun is low in the sky, as this means that it is either early or late in the day and thus its intensity is not at its height, which in turn means that the range of contrast (the difference between the deep shadows and highlights) is low, something that really helps capturing the details in both (especially with digital cameras).
The viewpoint is the next vital ingredient, but just what is the best? Here only you can tell, you just have to move around the subject, looking at it from different angles and from different heights, not to mention different focal lengths from the very wide to the telephoto. All of these will have dramatic impact on the image you capture and there is no real formula to follow, except perhaps one.
This composition “formula” centres on something called the “thirds”. Take any image and divide it into three equal part both lengthwise and height wise and you end up with 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines, placing anything on these vertical lines can really emphasize them, whilst placing anything on the intersections can be really powerful. Bearing these “thirds” in mind when composing your photograph could make all the difference.
To sum up, when taking your photographs, decide what your subject is, from which viewpoint and angle it looks the best, decide where to place it, and most importantly, make sure that the light is right, after all with landscapes there is normally always another day.
