Protect Your Baby’s Sensitive, New Skin - September 30, 2008 -
Use these natural baby skin care tips to protect your baby’s sensitive, new skin.
Characteristics of baby skin
It is essential to be very careful with your babys skin care. In the first stages of our life, the skin is very delicate, fragile and thin. Babys skin is different in functions and structure than the skin of an adult. It has high water content, allows low sweat production and the protection through sebum is almost inexistent.
The babies are very sensitive to temperature changes, unsuitable humidity or harmful and irritating substances. Consider using natural baby skin care products as they are more gentle for your baby’s skin. But before you flash out your money, try to compare prices for natural baby skin care and shop around for the best deals first.
Lotions and oils?
Contrary to popular thought, the babies do not need lotions unless their skin is dry. Oils and lotions will not allow your babys skin to sweat and can cause a rash or an allergic reaction. Powders should be avoided not only for the effect they have on the skin. Their tiny particles can provoke breathing troubles. If you have to use a powder put it in your hand and then apply it to the baby’s skin.
Massage
Babies enjoy being massage. In fact is a very important part of their growth. For you babys skin the benefits are huge. The massage stimulates circulation, immune system and tactile sense. Use baby massage oil but pour it onto your palms. Be careful with the rooms temperature (78 degrees Fahrenheit) and humidity.
Bathing
Proper bathing and skin care will maintain the babys delicate skin healthy. Newborns dont need bathing very often (2-4 times a week). Their skin cant get very dirty if you change their diapers frequently.Sponge baths are required at first. Until the baby’s umbilical cord falls off, this area should be avoided to prevent infections. Use only cotton wool or soft washcloths and baby soap/shampoo. Products for adults may contain irritant substances or allergens.
Diaper rash
The soap you use, some brands of disposable diapers or simply dirty diapers can cause skin irritations. Most diaper rashes are provoked by skin irritations. The best way to treat this disease is to clean well the area and to let the skin get some air. You should also change the diapers often and use ointments with zinc oxide.
Baby Acne
Acne is very common among newborns. Usually it shows up after 2 or 3 weeks after birth and is present on cheeks, forehead and chin. Baby acne usually clears up on its own, but most parents make the mistake to use oil or lotions. All you need to do is gently cleanse the affected areas with water once a day. You can also use soft blue light when your baby is sleeping as a treatment.
Sun: friend or foe?
While our bodies produce vitamin D when the skin is touched by sunlight, to much exposure can cause sun burns. Babys skin is very sensitive and babies under six months should spend very little time under direct sunlight. However, you should not keep your child locked inside the house. Use sun hats, sunglasses and protective clothing.
Your babys skin is very sensitive and delicate. we hope that the above natural baby skin care tips can help you to protect your baby’s skin better.

Coping with Infant Sleep Disorders - September 30, 2008 -
As an adult, it’s likely that you suffer from insomnia at least occasionally. Unfortunately, even though it seems like babies sleep a lot, babies as well as adults can have sleep problems, too. Sometimes, they can morph over from the occasional disturbance to an actual sleep disorder.
If this happens, the first thing you need to do is to get your child to a doctor so that the baby can be properly diagnosed. Of course, infants sleep a lot when very small and in fact spend most of their early weeks eating and sleeping. As they grow, they’ll spend more and more time awake. For the first few weeks, however, for the most part, the baby won’t be doing much other than eating, sleeping and soiling diapers.
As children get older, of course, it becomes much more exciting to stay awake than it does to go to sleep. Many young children have the idea that they are “missing something” every time they go to sleep. Adults simply have endless fun when they’re awake, while the child is stuck with boring old sleep. Of course, this isn’t true, but this is something that children go through to at least some extent for the most part.
The best way to make sure children go to bed without much trouble is to establish a regular routine. Follow the routine every night. For example, perhaps just after dinner, it’s time for bath. Once the child is in pajamas and ready for bed, some quiet playtime with toys in his or her room is to follow, followed by bedtime story, tucking in with stuffed animals or favorite blanket, and lights out.
Most children also go through periods when they experience nightmares or “the monster under the bed.” Again, this is usually pretty normal. Because young children sleep comparatively more than adults do as well and the line between imagination and reality is necessarily blurred at that age, sometimes sleep and wake patterns are much closer together for them, especially at night, so they may be “dreaming awake” for some of what the experience. Again, if this is true, simply being soothing and reassuring, while making sure that the child knows he or she needs to stay in bed, is the best way to handle this. (Of course, older children are very, very good about getting “spooky” monsters to delay bed times and other undesirable events, so of course, smart parents are aware of this and make sure these types of monsters are put in their places.)
For some babies just home from the hospital, especially if premature, they may suffer from sleep apnea. The parents who bring these infants home are required to go through courses for CPR, and many are also trained in the use of monitors for children so that they can be instantly alerted if babies stop breathing. This is a common cause for the disorder known as crib death, and such babies will likely be put on monitors so that parents will be alerted immediately if the baby should stop breathing. Simply nudging the baby or rubbing his or her back is usually enough to get these little ones who just aren’t quite old enough to know better to breathe on their own again.
By the time children are about six months old, the most acute danger for death has passed, with two years generally considered a safe age for no longer being at risk for this disorder. Your doctor will be able to tell you when your child no longer needs to be monitored for sleep apnea.

Baby Skin Care - Identifying Baby Skin Conditions - September 30, 2008 -
There are a variety of baby skin conditions and rashes out there and the best baby skin care prevention and treatment is to know what they are and what you can do about them.
Baby acne, is acne that happens on babies instead of adults. It is caused by the mother’s hormones coursing through the child’s blood stream. It generally occurs when your baby is two to three months old, and can last up to 4 to 6 weeks or more. Baby acne is normally noticed as red bumps on your child’s skin or face. Treating baby acne is fairly easy; the first baby skin care treatment is to keep the baby’s skin clean, and cool but not cold. Babies need warmth and if it’s too cold or too hot, it can hurt her, also avoid acne medicines and use only a mild soap to wash her with.
Another common problem is birthmarks; they can appear and are generally found around the head. If they are bigger than 1 and a half centimeters and closer to the spine, the bigger the problem they can cause. You need to have your pediatrician check her over thoroughly and if the doctor feels it is necessary, run a few tests. The birthmarks can be removed; however, caution is always advisable.
There are a few varieties of birthmarks and your doctor can help you to determine what type it is and what treatments are necessary.
The most common varieties are Stork bites, angel kisses, salmon patches, vascular stains; then the Caf au lait spots, moles, Port-wine stains, or nevus flammeus, and Hemangioma. Knowing what type is half the battle on what needs to be and can be done. Another very common and very frustrating condition is Cradle Cap; it is basically baby dandruff. Baby dandruff normally comes around when she is about three months old and can last several weeks. The severity of cradle cap can vary from one baby to the next as well as the treatments for it. The milder cases can generally be taken care of with No Tears baby shampoo. With the more extreme cases, many parents turn to olive oil and a soft comb designed just for her.
The most common and absolutely frustrating is diaper rash; it is more of a pain to your little girl than it is to you. Diaper rashes can be caused by a variety of things, especially the diapers themselves. Diaper rashes appear in different ways but if your little girl’s bottom is red and she is extremely irritable, then chances are she has it. There are a variety of natural cures and creams available for you to try. Your doctor can help you to determine the treatment and cure.
Just as there are numerous boys and girls, there are many rashes and skin conditions that can plague them. Your best bet with baby skin care is to be patient, ask plenty of questions and show your baby nothing but love and attention.

What To Look Out For When Choosing Nursery Furniture - September 29, 2008 -
The first thing to install to a child’s room is a smoke detector, for a few pounds (or free from your community fire prevention officer) these life saving gadgets must be your first purchase. When your child begins to wander it’s important that any spare electrical socket is covered with a simple plastic socket protector to stop your curious baby from sticking his fingers. Wherever possible, attempt to hide electrical leads and sockets with nursery furniture your child can’t move, like dressers.
Your child’s cot is the piece of nursery furniture where he will spend the most time for her first months. When selecting a cot it’s important to ensure they comply with the government safety regulations (BS EN 716 in the UK). Your cot must be deep enough so your baby cannot climb out. The rails of the cot should be close enough together to prevent your child from trapping their head. Make sure that cots with lowering sides lock automatically and cannot be opened by baby. If you have a used cot ALWAYS purchase a brand new mattress for each new baby. Your mattress must have a gap of not more than 4cm around the outside of the cot to prevent your baby from becoming trapped.
Remember the ‘back to sleep’ campaign designed to prevent sudden infant death syndrome and always lay your child down on his back. If using a nightlight ensure it is placed away from the cot and any other fabrics
Try to place your nursery furniture in a way that avoids positioning objects in front of windows. Also avoid positioning anything that can allow your toddler to stand on to peek out of a window. Keep the windows in the nursery properly secured. If you have to open a window to permit ventilation ensure the window is secured and never open more than 5cm, there are products on the market that prevent windows from being opened any more than this.
Changing stations may also be a cause of injury but this more often than not is a consequence of parents believing their child to be safe and wandering away. Using a u - shaped changing mat can help enormously in ensuring your child can’t roll away and some changing stations even have securings to strap your child. Changing paraphernalia must be positioned well out of grasp in a drawer of on a shelf. An accidental baby powder spill may have adverse effects to a baby.
Rather disturbingly one of the most common reasons of harm in a child’s room are curtains and blinds. Avoid using long curtains or drapes that may trap and asphyxiate a small toddler and never hang blinds with long cords in your baby’s room. When using blinds ensure the cords are secured up to keep them short and are never within a child’s grasp.
It’s important to have storage for the myriad of toys your youngster will no doubt collect but select cautiously. Seek out toy chests that are open or have fabric. As your baby gets bigger, he might climb inside the toy chest/toy box and a heavy lid may trap her so it’s important they be fitted with safety hinges or lightweight lids. Drawers are also possibly dangerous and ideally should have a slow close action. Doors also pose a hazard to little digits and all doors must be fitted with safety mechanisms to prevent tiny digits from becoming trapped
By following good guidance and ensuring their furniture meets the appropriate regulations new parents can design safe, stylish and stimulating bedrooms for children and babies for their new arrival.

Putting On The Brakes - September 29, 2008 -
I hope this article will be a reminder to all parents and caregivers, how important it is to utilize all the safety features provided on your baby stroller, specifically the dual lock brake system.
It is so easy to become distracted when you are out with the baby in the stroller, but remember, before you release both hands from the baby stroller handles, take the few extra seconds and lock the brakes.
Stroller manufacturers even go as far as stating if the stroller is not in motion, lock the brakes and never leave your child unattended.
Strollers today are made to be practical and the manufacturers put a lot of focus on accommodating the parents and protecting the baby with easy-to-use, safety features like the seat belt restraint system, wide base to prevent tipping and the dual lock brake system.
The particular safety feature, dual lock brakes, means both back wheels lock in place individually. Two separate brakes so if one brake is accidentally released or malfunctions, the other working brake is still locked.
To lock the brakes on most baby strollers is an effortless task that takes just a few seconds to do. You just simply press your foot down on a plastic tab or lever located in the back of the stroller, above both back wheels. By setting the lever in the lock position, it puts weight on the back wheels making it difficult for the stroller to roll.
Now this does not mean your baby stroller is bolted to the ground and will not move. If the stroller is parked on an incline or forcibly pushed, it can still move. And for that reason, you should always stay close by and never leave you child unattended while in the stroller.

Baby Shower Games - September 23, 2008 -
A Baby Shower usually lasts from 2-4 hours depending on budget, location, and guest list. Baby Shower Games are a great way to fill up some of that time. They also allow your baby shower guests to participate directly in the baby shower.
Baby Shower games are great ice breakers for baby shower guests who may not know each other. For a two hour baby shower you should have about 2-3 games. There are games that can be played by everyone at the same time. These include Baby Gift Bingo or a Baby Shower Scratch Off game. Other games last the entire length of the Baby Shower, such as the Pacifier Game.
Baby Gift Bingo
Purchase or create a blank Bingo Board. Many styles and themes are available. Hand one to each guest before the mom to be opens her gifts. Instruct your guests to fill out what they think the mom to be will receive as a gift. As the mom to be opens her gifts, each player will mark off a match on her bingo board. You decide what wins: straight bingo, X, four corners, etc.
Pacifier Game
Give each guest a pacifier necklace when they arrive and explain the rules to them. The rules are: If you say “baby” and someone hears you, that person gets your pacifier necklace. The winner is the person with the most pacifier necklaces at the end of the shower.
Some popular games are word searches, gift bingos, raffle tickets, and even pin the pacifier on the baby! If you are not sure of what your guests will enjoy, why not choose what the mom to be will enjoy! Games can be coordinated with your baby shower theme. Be creative and have fun!
Ribbon Game
Purchase spools of ribbon or string. They dont have to be expensive, just make sure you have enough for people who get carried away. Go up to each baby shower guest and instruct them to choose a length of ribbon or string that they think will fit perfectly around the moms belly. Cut the ribbon and have the guests hold on to them. Once everyone has their ribbon, each guest will wrap their ribbon around the moms belly. The guest who was the closest wins the game!!
There may be some moms who are sensitive about the size of their belly. Have an alternative game planned in case mom to be isnt comfortable playing this game.
Baby Food Jar Game
Guess the baby food flavor!! Take 3-5 jars of baby food and mark the bottoms with letters (A, B, C, etc). Make an answer key with the baby food flavor and corresponding letter. Remove the labels and place on a tray. Have your guests label a sheet of paper A-C (or A-E if you have 5). Move the tray from table to table and have guests guess what flavor the baby food is. The person who has all 5 right, or closest, wins.
Who has the dirty diaper?
Create diapers by taking napkins and folding them into diapers. Fold into a triangle, and then bring in the three corners to touch. Secure with double sided tape. Make sure there is room to peak inside the diaper. Decide on the number of winners you want. Take as many diapers and smear a chocolate bar inside to create a dirty diaper. Tip: Melt the chocolate in the microwave for 5 seconds to soften. Ask your guests to choose their diapers from a basket or place them under their seats before they arrive. The guests with the dirty diapers win!
Baby Related Items A to Z
Create sheets using a word processor marked A through Z. Pass out the sheets to your guests and tell them they have limited time (3 Minutes) to think of baby related items from A to Z. Everyone will get a kick to hear some things that people come up with!

Baby shower party is sharing of happiness among the expected parents, Friends and their relatives.
Baby shower parties are organized usually at the last months of pregnancy, hosted by close friends or relative, where the main aim lies to boost the parents-to-be excited for the future member of the family. To make the baby shower party a memorable event, it requires careful planning to ensure one has a great time at the party. Though there not much rules to follow for a baby shower party, but the following tips might also be of great help.
Choosing the right place
Keeping the expected mothers health in mind, mostly baby shower parties are conducted at the parent-to-bes house. Where guests find themselves more comfortable at home, which usually among closet friends and family members. If the weather permits baby shower parties can also be organized outdoors, wherein a barbecue party or a party at the local park can add-on to the excitement of the expected parents.
Though organizing a baby shower in a reserved secluded area like bar or restaurant might be costly, but it is of less complications as the decoration, food and drinks with the post-party arrangements are already been taken care of.

Naps: Guidelines for Understanding Your Child’s Napping Schedule - September 23, 2008 -
Figuring out naps for children can be far more dubious and confusing for parents than establishing healthy night sleep. It takes babies longer to settle into consistent, adequate length naps than it does to sleep through the night. Regular napping is even more difficult to establish for babies who have a history of colic or very fussy temperament as a newborn.
Naptime is not only more difficult to establish but it also provides different nourishment to the child than nighttime sleep. Even the morning and afternoon naps differ in their benefits. Babies have more REM sleep, the stage connected with dreaming, during the morning nap. REM sleep is associated with brain maturation and growth. The afternoon nap is linked with NonREM sleep, which is a deeper stage of sleep, and associated with psychological and physical restoration.
So how do parents know how often their child should be napping, for how long and when those requirements change? Below are some guidelines to help you along the way. Hopefully by knowing these sleep requirements and patterns, you will be able to read your childs sleep clues and help him/her get the rest s/he needs for healthy maturation and development.
Birth to Four Months:
Newborns sleep a lot. At this age the child is establishing good circadian rhythms. The baby begins to associate external cues with sleep. These outward signals include light versus dark, noise versus quite, and eye contact/play versus non-playtime. It is important to learn your childs signs for being tired, i.e., yawning, rubbing eyes, and/or scratching/pulling ears. Use these signs as a guide for when to put your child to sleep. The idea is to put your baby to sleep before the first signs of being tired appear. Until about seven to eight months of age, a baby should not be awake for more than two hours at a time. Some babies are ready for sleep after only being awake for an hour or so; it is critical to learn your babys comfortable awake time and put your child to sleep accordingly.
Four to Six Months:
Typically by four months and no later than six months, a babys sleep will become more organized and more adult like. The childs body rhythms are in sync with his/her sleep/wake cycles. By this age babies are taking three to four naps during the day. The final nap is usually very brief. The amount of time the child is awake between naps will vary, but should not be more than about two hours. The optimal time for a baby to go to sleep is just before the outward signs of tiredness appear (yawning, rubbing eyes, etc.) This is the ideal time to set up healthy sleep habits for your child. For more information please visit http://www.child-works.com.
Seven to Sixteen Months:
At this age the child is taking a morning and afternoon nap. The baby can increasingly stay awake longer as they grow older. Typically, a child will take a morning nap three hours after wake up time and an afternoon nap following lunchtime. The baby will now be able to remain awake for the entire late afternoon stretch until bedtime. An earlier bedtime may be necessary, at least temporarily, once the third nap is dropped.
Sixteen Months to Three Years:
Sometime between 16 and 18 months of age, babies will drop to one afternoon nap. Typically the child will be able to stay awake longer and longer in the morning, pushing the morning nap later and consequently the afternoon nap later. When this negatively affects an appropriate bedtime then the afternoon nap is dropped and the child is down to one nap per day. At first the nap will occur in the middle of the day to strike a balance between what use to be the morning and afternoon nap. Slowly the nap will move until after lunchtime (about 1:00pm) where it will remain until the preschool years.
Three to Six Years:
During this time the young child will drop the afternoon nap. How this nap is dropped varies among children. Some will take shorter and shorter naps while others will drop down to napping a few times per week. Parents need to follow the childs lead. This is not to say that once your child announces they no longer want to nap it is time to end napping. Let your childs behavior be your guide. If s/he is no longer able to fall asleep at an appropriate bedtime at night, then you should begin considering altering the nap schedule. You can either try to wake your child earlier from his/her nap or drop napping to every other day. Watch your childs behavior for signs of overtiredness. Arrange a nap schedule that minimizes your child feeling overtired.
When it comes to creating healthy sleep habits the most useful guideline is your childs behavior. Continually monitor your child for signs of being overtired. For a checklist on overtired behavior visit http://www.child-works.com. Childrens sleep needs vary and change as they grow. Starting at four months of age it is critical to have children nap in a crib or bed. Motion sleeping (like in a stroller, car seat, swing or arms) will not allow the child to cycle through deeper phases of sleep and the nap proves to be less beneficial in its restorative quality. Also, many parents tend to underestimate how much sleep their child requires to be able to function well. Learning your childs signals will steer you in the right direction for providing a healthy sleep schedule.

Baby Toys - Choose The Right Toys For Your Baby - September 22, 2008 -
With all the fuss made about kids toys these days, how does a parent decide whether the rattle her child is cooing to is safe, or whether its hindering her development in any way? The truth is that theres no need to be paranoid where toys for your kids are concerned. The buzz word should be safety. If all the controversy about the lead painted toxic toys has gotten you worried, consider wooden baby toys. Made from sustainable sources of wood, these are 100 percent safe, and contain no toxic substances in their paint. You dont have to panic every time baby takes one of these in her mouth (which will likely be every 2 seconds) because these toys are made through environmentally sound processes using the most natural materials. For an infant, options can range from wooden rattles and teethers to grasping toys and blocks for older babies.
Educational baby toys are also widely popular. The purpose of these is to encourage cognitive sills and mental abilities in an infant. Many of these toys are brightly colored. Many involve the use of sound to evoke some sort of reaction from the baby. Soft blocks and activity mats are just a few examples of such educational baby toys that enrich his mental processes as they entertain and keep him occupied.
Developmental baby toys are those that help your baby develop his motor skills help him hone his skills of recognition, and boost his creative skills. A playhouse is an excellent example of a developmental toy that enhances your babys creative skills. Left in the tent, even smaller babies who are in the crawling stage can enjoy games of peek-a-boo from inside the tent. Make sure you dont leave all alone in the room though.
Toy phones are also great developmental toys because babies learn to mimic your phone behavior. They familiarize themselves with the various electronics and appliances around the house and what they are used for. The toy phone is a prime example of how your baby can broaden the scope of his world through a troy.
Creating a closet full of great toys for your kids doesnt have to be expensive. Remember to pick a couple of pieces of each kind of toy depending on your babys age and motor skills, and mix them up with regular inexpensive toys and you have a perfect mix!
