Though traditional schools predominantly control the educational market, the rising costs of constructing and maintaining physical academic institutions (even high school campuses) is very costly; thus, passing expenditures onto student consumers. In more recent news, the Associated Press [1] did a story on Microsoft-designed high school in Pennsylvania. A step closer to industrializing online distance learning schools, students of this particular, modernized school still have to physically attend the campus, but theyve taken learning to a much higher level. The "School of the Future" is rightfully dubbed with this title as it is comprised of "digital lockers," interactive "smart boards;" and books are replaced with laptop computers. This is just one shining example of how contemporary education is evolving.

Another instance of how distance learning online has transformed the face of education was demonstrated during extraordinary turn of events, which occurred shortly after the passing of Hurricane Katrina. In October of 2005 through January 2006, over 3,000 students that could not physically attend their educational facilities participated in free distance learning online courses to bridge absent academic schedules. This particular program was smartly developed by Sloan Foundation and its partners to assist students who had been displaced from the storm. [2]

Distance learning online also made news just this past month when it was announced that e-learning modules were in the beginning stages for agricultural workers and farmers in the Philippines to increase skills and knowledge in agriculture. [3]

While these are just a few illustrations of how distance learning online schools are taking shape in the world; this also demonstrates the competent level of organization and strategic planning that has gone into the development of these virtual learning communities.

Predictably, online distance learning schools are swiftly gaining in popularity. As aforementioned, costs of conventional education is on the rise; and so being, distance learning online affords prospective students and other adult learners with the opportunity to gain an in-depth education at the fraction of traditional campus tuition. Also, since distance learning online is easily accessible and offers interactive instruction, students are discovering that not only are their online courses more cost-efficient, but they are also beginning to reap rewards from having earned their degrees or professional certification online.
